The first major historic urban center is Nitra, the capital
of the powerful central European empire. After the fall
of this empire, for thousand years Slovaks lived in the
Hungarian kingdom. New towns emerged, positioned on the
trade routes or around the fortified castles.
Many gained the priledge of the royal town which brought
them independence from feudal landlords and allowed them
to prosper.
