The basis of the museum's collection-building and research
activity is related to the Slovak Homeland Museum in Bratislava,
one of the predecessors of the present SNM, in whose historical
department a prehistory and a historico-archaeological department
were formed.
Techno-scientific institutes SNM were set up in 1969 which
in 1989 were altered into specialized museums. The formation
of the Archaeological Museum (AM) as the only such specialized
institution in Slovakia was completed in 1991 by its being
moved to the renaissance 16th century. The building is a
cultural monument.
