Blenheim with the (population 20,000), 30 km south of Picton, is the capital of the Marlborough region and the center of a large grape-growing area. The town of Blenheim, situated on the fertile Wairau Plains, is the heart of the province's commercial and suburban life.
The Blenheim has a wide array of fascinating events running throughout the year, and these have captured the attention of many tourists visiting the city; some of the popular events are Brayshaw Park Open Day, Queen Charlotte Maritime Festival, Hunter's Garden Marlborough and others that are delightful to welcome you.

Enjoy the sight of spectacular boats at Blenheim. The clear, spring-fed Taylor River, which flanks the town, is now an attractive sightseeing riverboats retrace the route of steamboats that once carried produce. The most popular recreational activity on the river is trout fishing, and good catches of brown and rainbow trout can be made quite close to Blenheim.

Or, you can also indulge in the beauty of Wairau River, which rises in the western mountain ranges, is the life blood of the province's prosperous wine and horticultural industries, the river and its tributaries are also a focus for recreation; especially the swift upper reaches are ideal for kayaking.

View the historical spot on the outskirts of town, Brayshow Historic Park preserves the province's pioneering endeavour. Relocated colonial buildings keep company with a modern building housing archives and a museum. The vintage farm machinery museum, where faithfully restored tractors and other machinery are displayed, is world renowned.

Or, simply a drive around the Wairau Valley will take you through some of the most attractive farming and horticultural country in New Zealand, set against a backdrop of forest clad mountains.

Getting There and Moving Around

By air

The Sounds Air - regular daily scheduled services to Wellington from Picton Airport (based at Koromiko) and Blenheim Airport. The daily return flights from Wellington to Blenheim and charters also available with The Air Marlborough.

By road

Tranz Scenic Coastal Pacific Express operates a daily return service between Christchurch and Picton. Taxi and bus sevices are also available to reach the station.

Taxi services, rental cars and charter bus services for larger groups are all available in Picton, Blenheim and Kaikoura.
