Port Moresby's population is made up from almost every
tribal group in PNG, as well as the country's largest foreign
community. The result is a rich diversity of cultures and
traditions, set against a backdrop of modern architecture
and lifestlyes.
The centre of Moresby, known as Town, is on a peninsula
overlooking Fairfax Harbour. Town has retained much of Moresby's
history, despite the growing number of modern hotels, shops
and apratments. Here you can find one of PNG's largest ceremonial
canoes hanging in the PNGBC Bank; or Moresby's oldest building,
the Ela United Church nestled between Steamships Department
Store and the ANZ Building.
It's a fascinating blend of old and new. Past the docks,
to the north of Town, lies Hanuabada, a Motuan stilt village,
rebuilt after its destruction in WWII.
