It is believed that the Maoi faces were positioned in a
way that faces the ocean. The faces are positioned in that
way to watch over the village of Rano Raraku. The statues
that are seen half buried on the sides of the volcanic cone
of this village were actually pieces waited to be transportd
to ahu around the island.
The statue were not meant to have stayed in this place.
The statues have bodies that extends up to 20-40 feet underground.
Centuries of erosion from the slopes above have covered
all but the tops of these statues-the largest Maoi ever
constructed and carved.
