The sprawling Royal Victoria Hotel was built during the
American Civil War and was used as the headquarters of Bahamians
who ran arms for the Confederacy. Part of the building was
later used for government offices. In its time, the hotel
was the showplace of the Bahamas, and its gardens reflected
its grandeur and opulence. The gardens contain about 300
kinds of tropical plants.
