The monastery is a historic center of Bulgarian culture
and architecture. The first monastery was founded in the
10th century as a colony. Located a few km from the present
monastery. The Rila Monastery is an old treasure store of
Old Bulgarian literature, works of art and artistic crafts.
Most of the preserved objects, books and documents are ecclesiastical
in character, but they are generally of high value.
