The impressive winter alpine landscape of Switzerland's Engadine
valley, together with the elegant St. Moritz resort, provide

Polo World Cup on Snow. Once again in January, 1999, four
Teams from various countries will compete on the frozen St.
Moritz Lake for the coveted championship title. Under the
patronage of the jewelry and watch producer Cartier, the renowned
St. Moritz Polo Club every year organizes the most significant
polo tournament on snow to be held anywhere in the world.
The Cartier Polo World Cup on Snow is listed in the "Top
Events of Switzerland" as publicized within Switzerland itself
and around the globe. Regularly for the lest several years,
between 10,000 and 15,000 spectators have attended the Cartier
Polo World Cup on Snow. Since 1985, when the idea to play
polo on the frozen St. Moritz Lake celebrated its world premiere,
the Cartier Polo World Cup on Snow has become an indispensible
event on the Engadine calendar. The teams from classic polo
nations such as Argentina and Enqland promise a spectacular
match in the midst of an idyllic, snowcovered alpine setting.

Montreux Jazz Festival

Since its beginnings as a three-day event in 1967, the Montreux
Jazz Festival has become a stupendous 16-day affair, headlined
by jazz, blues, rock, world-music and soul luminaries such
as George Benson, Maria Bethania, Ray Charles, Eric Clapton,
Miles Davis, Ella Fitzgerald, Roberta Flack, Aretha Franklin,
Herbie Hancock, Etta James, Quincy Jones, B. B. King, Oscar
Peterson and Sting. Festival founder Claude Nobs created an
event which was to become one of the most important festivals
of all, with a unique and eclectic musical reputation. Every
year, up to 200,000 visitors from all over the world attend
the Festival nights at the prestigious Auditorium Stravinski
and in the festive atmosphere of the Miles Davis Hall, or
enjoy the numerous free concerts at the Festival-Off, spread
all over the town of Montreux.

Rado Swiss Open
Gstaad, 3rd - 11th July, 2000
A week after the Wimbledon Championships end, the world tennis
focus shifts to the Swiss mountains and Gstaad. The tranquil
resort undergoes a dramatic transformation from resort into
the centre of top tennis. The charming Bernese village stages
the Rado Swiss Open with such success that it has twice won
the player's vote in the past five years as the best tournament
of the World Series.
One of the reasons is not only the spectacular setting, but
the real challenge for the players of dealing at over 3000
feet with much faster balls and courts than those they normally
face. A viewing feast for the more than 44 000 fans who come
to the tournament. They know that the winner can only be a
player combining outstanding technique with exceptional athletic
ability. Clay court tennis at this level gives splendid rallies,
either from baseline or at the net. The Swiss Open champions
list bears testi1 mony to the quality of the tournament, with
names like Albert Costa, Yevgeny Kafelnikov, Sergi Bruguera
and Stefan Edberg among recent winners.

International del film
Locarno, 4th - 14th August, 2000
Locarno, where the Cinema has been celebrated for fifty years,
lies on the shores of Lake Maggiore in southern Switzerland
(the Tessin Canton). Although at the foot of the Alps, it
enjoys a pleasant, Mediterranean climate. Locarno has long
attracted political and cultural personalities from all over
Europe. The Locarno International Film Festival continues
the city's tradition as a meeting-place for people from all
over the world. According to the national and international
press, the Locarno Film Festival can now lay a claim to being
"one of the world's six top festivals".
The other statistics are also striking, with an average of
almost 1000 press and media, and over 4000 film-professionals
from more than 30 countries attending. With its 7000 seats,
stase of the art technical facilities, and its giant screen
(26 x 14 m), the Piazza Grande has been, since its transformation
in 1971 into a summer outdoor theatre, one of the world's
largest and most attractive open-air cinemas.

International Festival of Music
Lucerne, 14th August -11th September 2000
International Festival of Music Lucerne this year is offering
a rich variety of over 70 events centred on the festival theme
of "Myths". The theme is treated from a number of different
perspectives in 18 different symphony concerts and various
newly created festival events including dramatised music in
the series of "Weltruf" ("World culture") performances, theatre
projects originating in Europe and from elsewhere around the
world as part of our "Musical theatre" programme, performances
by Evelyn Glennie (percussion) in the "Artiste ιtoile" cycle,
and "Children's corner" performances geared to young audiences.

The Swiss Open became the European Masters in 1983. Each year,
the highprofile US Masters attracts the best players in the
world. The Canon European Masters, meanwhile, has developed
over the lest twenty years to become one of the principle
(and most lucrative) tournaments on the turopean tour. It
attracts big-name participants from around the globe and boasts
a field the envy of most European events. Its breathtaking
alpine setting and warm village hospitality create a truly
special ambiance. Great golf in a great holiday centre makes
for a compelling, wonderful and ilvely mix, but you have to
be in Crans Montana at the stars of September to sample it
first hand.
