Leeds City Guide
United Kingdom>Leeds
Leeds, a city in the metropolitan county of West Yorkshire,
northern England, Leeds is the second largest metropolitan
district in the UK.
A vibrant, affluent capital, Leeds complements its economic
success with a lively arts, sporting and entertainment scene.
New and refurbished theatres, shopping malls, hotels, galleries
and cafe bars rub shoulders with stylish offices and award-winning
architecture
Observe the converted warehouse, St Paul's House, built
in Arabic-Saracenic style in 1878 for clothier John Barran.
This building is a landmark in the history of the clothing
trade as it was the first factory to mass produce ready-made
clothing.
For a taste of art, visit the City Art Gallery which possesses
the finest collection of 20th Century paintings outside
the Tate Gallery.
As you walk along the Headrow look out for the statue of
the brewer in Dortmund Square which was presented by the
people of Dortmund and celebrates the links between Leeds
and its German twin city.
Take the route down Lands Lane to Swan Street. This alleyway
was the yard of the White Swan Coaching Inn. The building
later became the City Varieties, the only surviving music
hall in the country and home to the famous "good Old Days".
Adjacent to Tropical World is Canal Gardens. Formally a
vegetable garden for the Mansion House, for which much of
Roundhay Park was the estate, Canal Gardens is without doubt
one of the most pleasant corners of Leeds.
For avid shoppers, you may want to visit Kirkgate Market.
Over 800 traders ply their wares in this Edwardian building
which is famous for its impressive dragons. Outside, is
the lively open-air market where Michael Marks of Marks
and Spencer first set up his Penny Bazaar in 1884 with its
well-known sign "Don't ask the price, it's a penny".
