The Old Melbourne Gaol provides a chilling example of 19th
century prison life. It was built as a short term remand
prison in the 1850s. It showcases a large collection of
penal and phrenological memorabilia. It was the scene of
135 hangings, the most notorious being Ned Kelly. His original
armour, death mask and pistol, lashing triangle and cat-o-nine
tails are all exhibited.
