In the south-eastern corner of Venezuela, comprising Bolνvar
and Amazonas states, and covering 45% of the land area,
lies the Guayana highlands, part of the pre-Cambrian Guiana
Shield which is one of the oldest rock formations in the
world. The main city is Ciudad Bolνvar (formerly Angostura),
site of the only bridge over the Orinoco in its 1,550 mile
length. The river is so constrained at this point that despite
the fact that there are still several hundred miles to go
before the waters reach the sea, the river bed is actually
below sea level.
