Kochi
: One of the natural harbours in the world, the city of Cochin
or also
"Kochi" has been conferred the title of Queen
of the Arabian Sea. Kochis is the commercial capital of
Kerala.
Chinese fishing nets along Cochin harbour . It specialises in exporting
pepper, seafood, rubber and coir. Kochi has been the nerve-centre of business
activities from ancient times. Trade attracted the Chinese, Jews, Arabs,
Portuguese, Dutch and English whose influence is still reflected in the
lifestyle of the people. Some of the finest monuments in Kochi such as
the Jewish Synagogue and the Dutch Palace are a product of this cultural
influence. The area around the oldest synagogue in the Commonwealth is
known as the Jew Town. A stroll down the narrow bylanes of the Jew Town
has an array of curio shops, warehouses and spice auction rooms. Kochi
has the old tiled houses built in the Chinese pagoda style. Colonial buildings,
Chinese fishing nets and mosques are few of the traces of past .
There are paces like the Mattancherry Palace, Jewish
Synagogue, etc but the Mattancherry Palace is very famous.
Mattancherry Palace - The palace (Dutch Palace) was built by the Portuguese
in 1557 and presented to the Cochin Raja, Veera Kerala Varma. The Dutch
renovated it after 1663, and therefore the palace has another name, 'Dutch
Palace'. The most important feature of Mattanchery Palace is the murals
in the bedchambers and other rooms, which depict scenes from the Ramayana,
Mahabharata and Puranic legends connected with Shiva, Vishnu, Krishna,
Kumara and Durga. These murals are some of the most beautiful and
extensive, and are one of the wonders of India.
