Catholics gain special indulgences by visiting Rome and performing
certain acts of devotion, during the date. Alo a special mass
will be led by the Pope. During the Great Jubilee, the pope
will open the holy door of St. Peter's Basilica, which has
been bricked over since 1975, the last Holy Year. Improvements
in Rome's facilities and services are being made to accommodate
an estimated 18 million visitors during the year 2000.
