Travellers Essentials


Currency
Litas (Lt) is the national currency unit since June 25, 1993. The denomination of currency is : 200, 100, 50, 20, 10, 5, 2 and 1 Lt (Litas). Coins: 1 Lt, 50, 20, 5, 2 and 1 Ct (Centas). All convertible currency can be exchanged in banks and currency exchange offices. The latter are available at hotels, airports, railway and bus stations and shops. Transactions are mostly made in cash. Most hotels, major restaurants and shops accept major credits cards including Eurocard, Mastercard, Visa and rarely American Express. Travelers Cheques are acceptable at banks and some currency exchange offices.

Visa
Foreign citizens or stateless persons willing to visit Lithuania are requested to obtain a visa.

Customs Regulations
Travelers arriving to the Republic of Lithuania for the period not exceeding three days inclusive must have not less than 300 litas in cash or a corresponding amount in foreign currency, and travelers arriving for a period exceeding 3 days must have not less than 100 litas for one day or a corresponding amount in foreign currency. This requirement shall not be applied to Lithuanian travellers, travelers going by transit via the territory of the Republic of Lithuania, and to non-lithuanian travelers arriving for the purposes of studying, medical treatment or working, upon presentation by them of a certificate issued pursuant to the procedure established by the Ministry of Interior.

Telephone Facilities
When dialling long distance in Lithuania, dial 8 (wait for the dial tone) then 2 and then the area code. Directory enquiries: information 09, fire brigade 01, police 02, ambulance 03, international operator 07. International calls from Lithuania can be placed directly from virtually all phones. Dial 8 (wait for the dial tone), then 10 and then the country code.

Satellite telecomunications
Mobile phone comunications is easily accessible in Lithuania and more than reliable now, be it a mobile GSM or NMT analogue network. To call a mobile within Lithuania dial 8 followed by the mobile phone code and telephone number. To call a mobile from outside Lithuania dial the international country code +370 followed by the mobile phone code.
