Cook Islands Shopping

Market
Not to be missed is the market on the waterfront at the western end of Avarua. Stalls sell food, drinks and crafts and there is often a competition for local singers to show off their talents. There are cultural shows and exhibitions throughout the year and the two museums and libraries in Avarua are open throughout the week.

Cook Islands
Pearls, especially the exquisite black pearl, can be purchased at extremely reasonable prices in the Cook Islands. But as with all gems, quality and value vary widely. We recommend you purchase black pearls and pearl jewelry from a member of the Cook Island Pearl Guild.

From time immemorial, pearls have symbolized love, happiness and good fortune. Legends tell of the mystical birth of pearls from the sea, which is astonishingly close to reality. Today, the black pearl is considered the most magical and feminine of jewels; the passion it excites is as fiery as love; its power is the beauty of the eternal. It is a gift of magic and perfection from the Cook Islands.

Avarua
Visitors marvel at the local arts, black jewelry, crafts and colorful clothing found at bargain prices throughout the Cook Islands. Wood carvings and needlework are generally on every visitor's shopping list. You can breathe a sigh of relief knowing the quality is high, and you won't have to bargain over the price.

The main shopping area in the Cook Islands is located in Avarua, the local township on the northern side of Rarotonga.
