Kuda Eid (Small Eid)
Maldives, 19 January 2000
Kuda Eid represents the end of Ramadan and is also known as
Eid al-Fitr. It is celebrated when the new moon is
sighted, which is usually announced by a canon in Male and
via television. The day starts with a prayer and is followed
by a special lunch for the family members to get together.
In the afternoon, the main streets are filled with a festive
atmosphere, people dressed in their new clothes, colourful
bands and route marchers. The less fortunate are also not
forgotten as offerings, money or food are given to charity.
Everybody is greeted with Eid Mubarak (Eid Greetings!)
and cards are given to relatives and friends.
