People
The population of Vanuatu is estimated to be 185,204 in the 1998
sensus, yielding a population density of 15 persons per sq km. Ethnic
Melanesians known as ni-Vanuatu compromises 94 percent of the people,
the remainder are of French, Vietnamese, Chinese, Polynesian, or
Micronesian descent.
Rural areas are almost entirely ni-Vanuatu and contain 81 percent
of Vanuatu's people. About 70 percent of the republic's population
live on the islands of Anatom, Efate.
Language
English, French and Bislama are the official languages. This most
widely used language is a Melanesian mixture of French and English.
French and English are widely spoken. There are more than 100 local
dialects.
Religion
The religion of the island mostly contains of Christian, including
Presbyterian, Anglican, Roman Catholic and several other denominations.
